About Yue
Yue Song is a Chinese composer and pianist based in Dublin, Ireland, and represented by the Contemporary Music Centre Ireland. She began her musical journey at the China Conservatory of Music, where she earned a BA in Composition under Professor Wanchuen Shi (2009–2014) and then pursued a Master's degree in Composition at the Central Conservatory of Music with Professor Binyang Li (2014–2017). In 2018, she moved to Ireland to undertake a PhD in Composition at TU Dublin Conservatoire, where she studied under Professor Gráinne Mulvey, completing her PhD in 2023.
Yue’s compositions span a wide range of genres, including opera, orchestra, Chinese orchestra, chamber music, solo pieces, and electronic music. Her works have been performed across Europe, North America, and Asia, by renowned ensembles such as Crash Ensemble, ConTempo Quartet, and Concorde Ensemble, and at major festivals in Austria, Canada, China, Estonia, France, Italy, Ireland, and the U.S. She is particularly interested in collaborative composition, aiming to discover and integrate the unique characteristics of each performer to create works that highlight both individuality and collective expression. Coming from a classical music background, Yue has a deep interest in various art forms, especially theatre and literature, which has influenced her passion for opera. She often writes her own librettos and has been recognized for her innovative approach to blending music and narrative.
Yue has received awards including prizes at the World Championship Composition Competition (Franz Schubert Conservatory), European Composer Competition (Academia Musica, Vienna), Women Composers Competition (Fem Festival, Florence), and China Chamber Opera Composition Promoting Project Prize (CCOM, Beijing). Her works have been published by Crash Records, and on DVDs released by Central Conservatory of Music and Beijing Dance Academy. Her recent album of bass clarinet and electronic works, performed by Marcella Barz, was released on North Bull Records. Additionally, her orchestral piece Ting Yún (Listening To The Clouds) was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in January 2025 as part of Composer Lab 2024.
